On the western side of Varassova, and following a difficult climb of more than two hours from the village of Perithori, one arrives at another series of caves, with wonderful views of the mouth of the Evinos river and the plain of Galatas. The largest of these caverns was used as an ascetic retreat during the Middle Byzantine times. In front of its mouth are the remains of a church dedicated to Agios Nikolaos. Of very small dimensions (8 x 3.80 m), the chapel was built with slightly worked limestones and bricks, without much care. In front of the cave there is a built cistern of similar construction: once covered with a gable roof, nowadays it bears a semicylindrical arch.
