The proposed route covers the entire length of the perimeter of the Messolonghi – Aitoliko lagoon complex, with its monuments from various eras, as well as points of natural interest. The stops are located along the National Road from Messolonghi to Agrinio, which offers access to sites and monuments that are off the Ionian Road axis, and also to smaller provincial and local roads. Thus it is considered more appropriate to travel by car. There are archaeological sites and monuments that can be visited, while information is also provided on other sites of archaeological interest which are not easily accessible.
Kryoneri is conventionally proposed as the starting point, as it used to be a long-standing transport hub and communication point with the Peloponnese, and as the final point, the mouth of Acheloos. Rest areas and visitor facilities are provided along it.
Some of the earliest settlements and centres of the area, which in ancient times belonged to southern Aetolia and Paracheloitida, are located along this section. It flourished in the Early Byzantine, Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, as the scattering of monuments along the entire route shows.
The proposed route is mixed, combining both cultural and natural landscapes. Accordingly, a potential visit is organised along two possible axes that include their respective monuments and sites:
